DONTAE SHARP

Dontae Sharpe has been incarcerated since the age of 19 for a crime he did not commit.

Counting THE DAYS.

As of today, 16th August 2018, Dontae has been incarcerated:

KEY ISSUES

  • No Physical Evidence: NO evidence at the scene links Sharpe to the crime for which he is now serving a life sentence.
  • Persistent Key Witness Recantation: Within 2-months after trial, the 15-year-old state’s alleged eye-witness came forward to recant- later testifying she felt pressured to lie at trial and received rewards from police beforehand.
  • Alternative Suspects Not Pursued: A former Detective on the case admits Dontae Sharpe was wrongfully accused and wrongfully prosecuted and admitted to selective-documentation of evidence. Highly-likely alternative suspects never not pursued.
  • Alibi Witnesses Never Interviewed: Since trial, Dontae Sharpe’s legal team learned alibi witnesses for Mr.Sharpe were also never interviewed by police.

November 2016

March 2016

NAACP Launches “Free Dontae Sharpe and Kalvin Michael Smith” campaign.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the federal decision. Dontae remains imprisoned.

2010

2009

A federal judge deemed Dontae innocent and orders him immediately released.

Beatrice Stokes recanted, confessing she’d held “the truth inside for years.” She said this while speaking to Sharpe’s paid private investigator, a former Greenville police detective who investigated Sharpe’s case and believes he is innocent. In December 2000, Stokes reversed course when reinterviewed by the Greenville police. This time, she claimed her initial trial testimony was true, although she maintains she never saw who fired the fatal shot.

2000

February 1997

Sharpe began the process of appealing his conviction in both state and federal court on several grounds including ineffective counsel, and newly discovered evidence that someone else was responsible for the crime. The case went back and forth between state and federal courts for several years.

Charlene Johnson recants her testimony – she admitted just months after the trial was over that she had lied, a position she has maintained for 22 years. In a recent sworn affidavit, she wrote, “My lies have kept Dontae in prison, but they have also been a very heavy burden for me. I feel stuck in Greenville until I fix what I did and Dontae is free.”

Later in 1995

July 17, 1995

Dontae Sharp is convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Dontae Sharpe is arrested, largely on the testimony of 15-year-old Charlene Johnson, who initially refused to come to the trial and testify; police, in turn, took her into custody and brought her to court. Johnson admitted at trial that she’d received $500 for “coming forward.” Another witness Beatrice Stokes – claimed to have witnessed a scuffle and a gun, but acknowledged that she could have been “high as a kite” at the time of the shooting.

April 1995

February 11, 1994

George Radcliffe was murdered about 9:30pm.

Although this event has passed, there is still no change in the case. It is a great overview of the case.
